Decide whose name goes on the sign

Before you think about roofs and colors, a real estate logo starts with a simpler question: whose brand is this?

If you work as a solo agent, the brand is mostly you. People choose a person to sell their home, and after an open house it's your name they type into a search bar. A logo built from your name, in lettering with some character, often does more for you than another house icon. For the lettering, our article on how to choose a logo font walks through the options.

A brokerage or a team has to hold several agents together, so a business name with one simple symbol makes more sense. For property managers, whose logo turns up on leases and on the van that comes to fix a leak, steady and organized beats glamorous.

If you work under a brokerage, check your brokerage's branding rules before you design anything. Some set how an agent's or a team's logo may appear next to theirs, and following them now beats reprinting yard signs later.

Readable from a moving car

A yard sign gets a few seconds of attention, from across a lawn, through a car window. Thin script and pale colors don't survive that. A short name in solid letters and one simple shape do.

Sign panels are wider than they are tall, which is why so many agent logos put the symbol beside the name. Our AI example above, Blue Harbor Realty, is built that way: a navy roof over blue waves on the left, the name on the right, in the Minimalist style. On a sign panel, or the narrow rider hanging below it, that layout fills the space well.

That logo is about five times as wide as it is tall, though, and in square spaces like social avatars the name gets too small to read. Our free logo checker measures this and fails logos that wide for square use. You don't need a new logo to fix it, just a second version with the roof and waves on their own. An AI logo you buy as an SVG opens in our editor: delete the name there and download the symbol alone.

Every agent has a roof

The roof outline is the symbol of the trade, and it isn't a bad one. It says “property” faster than anything else. The trouble is that it says it for everyone. If your logo is a roof over your name, so is the logo on the next sign down the street.

You can keep the roof and still make it yours. Add one local detail, the way Blue Harbor's waves point to the water, or build the roof into a letter of your name. A color none of the other agents near you use helps too. Our article on choosing logo colors shows how to check what your competitors already use.

Other common symbols need more care. Keys fit property managers, who deal in keys every day, better than agents. Handshakes are worth skipping: they read as insurance or banking, and two hands turn into a blob at small sizes. City skylines turn into a comb of thin lines just as fast.

The small jobs it does every day

The yard sign is the big job. Most days, your logo does these instead:

  • Marking listing photos, if your listing service allows logos at all. A small one-color version in a corner does it without covering the kitchen.
  • Filling a social avatar. Most networks crop it to a circle, so give it the symbol or your initials, not the full logo.
  • Sitting on a business card, where the full logo has room.
  • Signing off your emails, as a small PNG, since many email apps can't show an SVG.

Starting from your name

Your name is already in every template above. Click one and it opens in our free logo maker. Restyle the lettering, colors and spacing; each part can also be moved, resized or recolored. Icons can't be redrawn there, so pick a template whose symbol already fits. Editing needs no account, and your download comes with a white version for those photo watermarks, plus a black one.

If you'd like a design no template library has, the AI logo generator higher up this page is already set to Real Estate. Type your name, and one thing the logo should show if you have an idea; we left that field empty for Blue Harbor Realty. If you are the brand, try Signature, which turns your name into lettering that looks handwritten. Minimalist suits a brokerage. If your brokerage has colors, enter up to three of them under Custom in the Color menu. An email or Google sign-up gets you the first AI design free.

Before you order signs

Shrink your favorite to the size of a browser tab, then view it against a dark background; the logo checker does both for you. A sign maker will want a vector file, an SVG or a PDF, and our article on logo file formats explains which one goes where. And check your country's trademark register first.

FAQ

Real Estate Logo Maker questions

If you work alone and plan to keep selling under your own name, use it. Clients hire a person, and a logo made of your name still works if you change brokerage. A business name makes more sense when you plan to build a team or might sell the business one day. Some agents use both, with their name large and the team name smaller beneath it. Either way, keep it short enough to read on a yard sign from the street.

We'd keep the two apart. Make your logo a file of its own and place it next to the brokerage's logo on signs and ads, the way your brokerage asks. Some brokerages limit how large an agent's logo may be beside theirs, so read their rules first. Squeezed into one design, the two logos compete, and both end up smaller on the sign.

Use a one-color version, usually white, as a transparent PNG. Place it small in a corner and lower its opacity in your photo app, so it marks the picture without hiding the room. Template downloads include white and black versions, and our editor can recolor an AI logo once you've bought its SVG. First check your listing service's photo rules, because some don't allow logos on listing photos at all.

If your brokerage's branding rules ask for it, yes. Otherwise it's your call. Matching colors make your signs look like part of the office, which helps while you're there. Colors of your own travel better if you switch brokerages later. Your logo will often sit right next to the brokerage's, so put the two side by side before you decide and make sure they don't clash.

Usually not. A slogan under the logo turns into tiny text on a yard sign and disappears completely in a social avatar. Put it on your website and your listing flyers instead, where it can be set large enough to read. If a slogan really is central to your brand, keep a second version of the logo without it for small spaces. You can remove a template's slogan in our editor.
